After his speech and the end of the DNC he switched his affiliation back from D to I. That is NOT to say he could not be the majority leader but it would take a mass call in, texting, telegrams etc, from his base to make that happen. The sitting Senators would need to be swayed by populism not lobbyists.
I think though he could get a couple of pretty hefty committee chairman slots. I honestly think the Democrat party is afraid of him and his mainly younger base who are just now beginning to really engage in the process. They are the future and could easily in the next 15-20 years make the Democrat party irrelevant.

Plus, I recall Sanders saying to someone last Fall or Winter (I'm paraphrasing) that of course he was a Democrat...he was running for president on their ticket. walking man---Thanks for clearing that up for me. Somehow I missed that move. As to his young supporters and the future. My 20 year old daughter is an ardent Bernie supporter and she takes all of this very, very seriously...as do her friends. So, yeah...new times in the ol' party are acomin'.
As I understand it the majority leader in the senate is elected by a vote of the senators of the majority party. It is usually passed down to a member of the Ol'Boy party members, of which Sanders is not. His base won't make a hell of a lot of difference since he is only reelected to Vermont voters.
I was solid for Sanders but thought he acted like a petulant old man with only a lukewarm endorsement of Hillary. It is either Hillary or Trump and Sanders could have done an energetic endorsement and quieted his dissenters - but didn't. the Ol'Buzzard

Ol'B---I've been following Bernie for years and was really energized by his campaign, but in the end, given that it was clear he lost (REGARDLESS of why) it was time to energetically endorse Clinton to bring together the whiner followers and for the obvious threat of the maniac whose name we all know. In other words, for the good of all, we need to assure that asshole will not get in the Whitehouse. The endorsement didn't come across strong enough for me either.
We need to take back the Senate in any case. It would be nice if Bernie could be Majority Leader, but it's unlikely. But if Trump gets the White House and/or the GOP keeps the Senate, we're f&cked.
Tom---Yep. The only consolation to Trump getting elected is that all the ignoramuses who voted for him will be f&cked as well...they're just blind to it.
