Finance industry bemoans hard times in an era of reduced bonuses

Bloomberg's Max Abelson takes us deep into the spectacle of members of Wall Street's 1% bemoaning their difficult straits as they struggle to make ends meet with their reduced bonuses. One doesn't know how he'll tell his children that they can't go to an exclusive private school anymore, another bemoans his mere 1200sqft New York apartment, and a third is gutted at the thought that he and his family no longer toss away the coupon circular that is left in their doorway -- now they glance at it!

“People who don’t have money don’t understand the stress,” said Alan Dlugash, a partner at accounting firm Marks Paneth & Shron LLP in New York who specializes in financial planning for the wealthy. “Could you imagine what it’s like to say I got three kids in private school, I have to think about pulling them out? How do you do that?”
...“They have a circular that they leave in front of the buildings in our neighborhood,” said Arbeeny, 49, who lives in nearby Cobble Hill, namesake for a line of pebbled-leather Kate Spade handbags. “We sit there, and I look through all of them to find out where it’s worth going.”
...The malaise is shared by Schiff, the New York-based marketing director for Euro Pacific Capital, where his brother is CEO. His family rents the lower duplex of a brownstone in Cobble Hill, where his two children share a room. His 10-year- old daughter is a student at $32,000-a-year Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn. His son, 7, will apply in a few years.
“I can’t imagine what I’m going to do,” Schiff said. “I’m crammed into 1,200 square feet. I don’t have a dishwasher. We do all our dishes by hand.”

Professor---Yeah, I think they are serious. I suppose it's possible that bloomberg.com is a subsidiary of the Onion...but, not likely.

jadedj said...

Punch---Okay, I can't resist. How about instead...EAT SHIT? Not you.

I still trying to get the kinder and gentler thing going.

To be fair, washing dishes by hand is a human rights violation.

Let's see their average salary before bonus was $348,000 and their bonus was cut 14% to total anywhere from $103,000 to $150,000. Now that was the median range.

What's his face was right, us without money really don't understand what they are whining about.

His kid's school cost more than I make on retirement. What am I going to do??? And my wife has a dish washer: me.

Slow down for the 1%ers picking up cans along the hiway, hit one of them and you'll see how much tort reform the rich are really in favor of.

The real fear, the fear this article you reference did not point out, these pukes are afraid if their income falls low enough they will have to pay a fair share for this nations protections and obligations. That scares the hell out of them.

As if this week weren't bad enough already. Opening line of the Oscars to TV audience from Billy Whatshisface... During these hard economic times, enjoy yourselves watching millionaires giving gold statues to each other.

The irony here is they have a lot in common with wait staff. Their salary is artificially low(for them, but seem very good to the rest of us) and they depend on the bonuses to make up the difference sorta like tips for wait staff, only on a much, much larger and grander scale.

Instead of bitching about the cramped apartment in Manhattan they could live in the 'burbs and commute, but they want to be close to where the action is and make their own choices, so cry me a fucking river!!!

D S W S---1% World problems.

Harlequin---Yep, a brain boggler.

Thank you once again for your too kind words (the song)(nottheunfucking part)(kind, I mean)(nevermind...fuck it).

B B---So have I. Such as the U.S. Representative (name forgotten) who stated that we (the rest of us, I surmise) don't realize how difficult it is to live on $350,000 per year. Oh really?

Mo.stoneskin---Hey, que pasa dude? No see longo timeo! I guess this means I'm going to have to go check out what you're up to these days.

But on to your quite fair assessment. Dish pan hands are right up there with living in an Econoline Van, under an Interstate Overpass, here in the U.S...after being foreclosed on and kicked out of one's home by a corrupt financial institution. Same tribulation shit. Oh, and did I mention Job? Same deal.

w m---I suggest he/they try $55,000 TOTAL, for a family of four...PER ANNUM! That would be my family. Somehow we seem to get buy. Wait...I forgot...it's because we pulled our two girls out of their private academies...and gave up our Sunday golf games at the club...and let the butler go.

Ol'B---Real reality is a little to subtle for their mindset, I think.

t y f---I am a charter member of the Fuckem Club. Fuckem!

Mr. C---Priceless!

Kulkuri---They also have a lot in common with the pre-revolution French Aristocracy.

They could. They haven't. They won't.

Typical liberal class warfare. You working-class peons have NO idea what it's like to have money coming out of your ears, and then find out it still isn't enough.

I own three yachts, and one of them......I'm getting verklempt, talk amongst yourselves......OK, I'm better now: one of them might be repossessed. Either that or we'll have to shorten our vacation in Monte Carlo to just 3 weeks instead of 5. You have no idea how agonizing this is.

jadedj said...

YD G---I'd give up my bonus to see that...if I had one...HARHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAR!

Tom---I've always been a sucker for a sad story, particularly one told with verklempt. Too bad ist dies nicht ein.

I have no experience with large sums of money so I'll restrict my comment to the song. Now I know from where Diana Krall got her vocal stylings for her version of that song.

I can solve their problems in three words:
"JUMP, FUCKERS, JUMP!"

Chimp---Without parachutes, as it were ;-)

Doug---Diana...oooooooh yeah. Nice lungs. BTW...sorry, didn't mean to skip by you.

There's only one cure for the horrible "malaise" these poor folks are feeling, take a no expense paid vacation with a no-return ticket to Somalia and the rest of Northeastern Africa to bask in the lap of luxury.

boomer---Long see, no time!

Damned great idea!

And today Ann Romney tells us that she doesn't think of herself as rich. 250 million is the last figure I saw. She used her MS as an example of how she has rearranged her thinking on "being rich". My mother-in-law" who can't work and is on disability ($1,000 per month...which took TWO YEARS to get on) and gets help from us when we can, has MS. Try a little of that shit sandwich Ann Romney. Believe me, my MiL would cry her a river...not.
